Here's one way to look at it: what matters is not that Indy and his crew succeed in preventing or even delaying the Nazis, but rather that they strive courageously to do so.

Because in a scenario in which they (symbolising the good of humanity) don't even show up at the races, why would Jehovah stop at incinerating Hitler and his inner circle as in your continuation of the narrative?

Would we not be in a Sodom and Gomorrah/Flood situation in which the Big J. says, "You know what? This whole species has proven itself to be wicked beyond redemption. Imma lay waste to the whole lot of 'em right now."

Indy's party are the ten righteous people that couldn't be found in S&G, whose efforts convince Jehovah to simply excise an initial tumour, rather than euthanising the whole organism.

Maybe.

Hmm ..and to think "U-boat rides hanging on the periscope by a bullwhip" (presumably underwater with Indy holding his breath for a very, very long time) used to be my biggest gripe with that movie.

I have zero gripes with the movie - I actually think it's a perfect film and it's by a wide margin my favorite film of all time - but I love digging into its themes and what it suggests beyond the edges of the frame.

The Nazis don’t know where Marion is. They literally follow Indy to Marion. This post doesn’t that that into account.
