Here's one way to look at it: what matters is not that Indy and his crew succeed in preventing or even delaying the Nazis, but rather that they strive courageously to do so.

Because in a scenario in which they (symbolising the good of humanity) don't even show up at the races, why would Jehovah stop at incinerating Hitler and his inner circle as in your continuation of the narrative?

Would we not be in a Sodom and Gomorrah/Flood situation in which the Big J. says, "You know what? This whole species has proven itself to be wicked beyond redemption. Imma lay waste to the whole lot of 'em right now."

Indy's party are the ten righteous people that couldn't be found in S&G, whose efforts convince Jehovah to simply excise an initial tumour, rather than euthanising the whole organism.

Maybe.
